This page explains step-by-step how to change the fonts in the Firefox web browser running on Mac OS X systems for every time you surf the internet.

Note: The following abbreviations for keys on the Mac are used: Ctrl is used for the Control key, Apple is used for the Command key, and Alt is used for the Option key. For keyboard access, make sure "Full keyboard access" is turned on--you can turn it on or off by pressing Ctrl+F1 at any time.

Change the fonts in Firefox 3

Note: If you only want to change the font size temporarily, see the How to make text larger in Firefox 3 guide.

Step 1: Open the "Fonts" window

Click on "Firefox" in the menu bar, or press Ctrl+F2 to highlight the menu bar and then press the right arrow key, to open the "Firefox" drop-down menu as shown in fig. 1.

Step 2: Choose the fonts for all web pages you visit

In the "Fonts" window shown in fig. 3, click on the drop-down button next to "Proportional," or press Tab until it is highlighted. Use the mouse or the up and down arrow keys to select whether you want proportional text to be serif (such as Times) or sans-serif (such as Helvetica).

Select a specific serif font by clicking on the drop-down button next to "Serif" or by pressing Tab until the button is highlighted. To select a sans-serif font, click on the drop-down button next to "Sans-serif" or press Tab until the button is highlighted. For either, use the mouse to scroll through the available fonts and click on the one you want, or use the up and down arrow keys to scroll through the fonts until the one you want is highlighted.

You can also change the font size here by using the drop-down buttons on the right.

To tell Firefox to use your font choices, untick the box beside "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above" by clicking on it, or press Tab until it is highlighted and then press the Spacebar to untick it.

Click on the "OK" button, or press Enter, to return to the "Preferences" window (fig. 2).

Click on the red "close button," or press Apple+W, to finish and return to Firefox.

Note: If this does not work it could be because your computer settings cannot be changed due to local IT policies--contact your local IT support for further help.
